EW Spoiler Room - 1/14/13

Can you tell me ANYTHING about the Castle two-parter? — Ginny

Other than saying there were some “big, surprising” things in store, Seamus Dever was pretty mum when we caught up with him at the People’s Choice Awards. But he did reveal a nugget that will make fans of the dapper detective very happy. “I think later on in the season we’re going to find out some more about Ryan’s past,” he says. “So there’s an episode that’s going to be dedicated to that.”

  1. Great, hope its not as boring as the Espo centered one. I don't watch this show for the back stories, this isn't what made season 2,3 so great, can't we go back to those? Great story lines with a little romance, keep with the formula.

    1. Absolutely, the cases have been predictable and what relationships wre there have fallen to bickering, goof off and no banter or inaction at all. You can have the procedural, the romance and the central characters and supportive cast. And no, it does not take more than 40 min. They've done it before, other shows have done it too. It should not be either or.

  2. Yeah, sounds like another episode without Caskett. Honestly I barely care about the crime solving this season unless it's giving Castle and Beckett an opportunity to be awesome together. I'm in it for the romance now.

  3. Anon 1.46 and 2.55,I hope you two don't take this the wrong way but when you read a book do you skip through all the pages skim reading until you find a page with your 2 fav characters on them having a kiss? And then to the end of the book to check they're still together? When you watch a dvd do you scene select and only watch the kiss 3/4's of the way through? Yes the show is called Castle, therefore it is a Crime Procedural about a man named Richard Castle and therefore by extension; the people who affect his life every week. So not just Beckett but Espo, Ryan (whom without they actually wouldn't close as many cases) Lanie (same deal) Gates effectively determines how or if Castle stays in the Precinct, Alexis (his daughter) (obvious reasons) and Martha (his mother) (again obvious reasons). Everybody has an important role to play. Castle is not a soap opera it does not revolve around the romance.

    1. Very well said! I actually loved this week's episode, it actually reminds me more of season 2/3.... Where the episode wasn't centered around the two leads but was more of a crime procedural.

  4. Anon 2:55 here, Kelly. I got a little carried away. I don't actually want the show to be all romance. I do still enjoy a good murder mystery. But a little more romance wouldn't hurt. Or at least hints of romance? It hardly feels like they're a new couple in love sometimes. Some passion when they're away from the station would be nice. Even small moments like them getting the initial murder call while they're cuddling (or more!) in bed. Remind us they're in love, then get to the crime stuff.

I'm not threatening to quit watching or anything. Just explaining what I'd like to see a bit more of if it were up to me.

    1. i agree 100%. Throw us a frickin bone here (to quote Austin Powers movie)..........a little here and there can be worked in......I will never stop watching, but, I am getting a little depressed b/c i love them together so much! it doesn't hurt to give us a little something something..........

    2. Lol I was very frustrated when I wrote that yesterday; I had just done a huge long rant on the discussion post of the Espo episode and then I jumped on this page and then my head exploded. I do love Caskett; believe me I do; when they get all cute I go all warm and fuzzy and squeal. Out loud. I yearn for a nice scene of them maybe lying in bed together. But at the same time I love every single part of this show I love every little part that makes it so special. These Characters are so great; they are the reason I watch. All of them. The murder cases are so clever. The twists are clever. The writing is top-notch. When Caskett first got together I thought that I would be one of these fans; excited to see relationship moments every week and disapointed if I didn't; but honestly, watching Espo's ep reminded me why I fell in love with the show 4 and a half seasons ago.

    3. Again, I find myself thinking I must be watching a different show to some people. There's a reminder in every single episode so far that they are a couple. Every one. It might be a look, a comment, or a kiss but we're never left not being reminded that they are in a relationship now. Yes, even 5x11 - right at the start, Castle prefixes his question to Espo with "in a relationship..." it was a completely superfluous thing to say; it's obvious he was talking about movie night with the girlfriend and specifically him and Kate. That particular phrase was put there specifically to remind us, this is a couple and they're getting on doing normal couply things together, and it's totally ok for them to do this and get on with the working relationship without it interfering with their ability to get the job done.
I actually think that last bit is extremely important. They've made a pretty good point of compartmentalising the relationship stuff from the crime procedural stuff for the most part. There have been moments it's bled through (Probable Cause et al) but when on the case and working it's been all business. Which is as it should be. I suspect this is going to become relevant at some point when the relationship is outed (which eventually it must be) to Gates and everyone else. I might be wrong on that but I think the fact they've been working quite effectively together despite the personal relationship will go a long way to proving it's doable.
I'll be honest, I DON'T want the romance rammed down my throat week in, week out. Yes, I am a huge Caskett shipper and I would LOVE to see kissing, cuddling and couplyness, but I recognise this is only one part of the sum and for the show to work, the whole must come together. And so far I like the way they are doing this.
I do think we've got some big relationship focussed episodes / moments to come; there's still a lot of places their relationship can go and we're going to see some angst and some fluff and probably, some big smoochy moments that'll keep those who want the smoochy stuff happy. I just think the reason we don't get it week in and week out is to keep people hungry for it. When we do get it, it's gonna be great!

    4. Amen! This show is amazing! I always feel like i'm watching a completely different show than some fans. And the ABC board is always whining. My goodness. I don't know what could satisfy some fans in this fandom.

Even if we were to get a 2 minute love scene with heavy petting and kissing and nudity this fandom would complain that it should've been 3 minutes and the lighting needed to be brighter and Nathan needed to touch Stana like this or that and Stana shouldn't have blinked or smiled or OMG!

      Cry me a river!

      Wahhhh! Wahhhh!

We get more than most couples ever get and it's still not enough.

    5. I totally love your comment!!! I agree this is an amazing show. I'm always satisfied with every episode. This is a show for everyone. Its not about sex and its not about how many times they have sex. It's a show centered in New York about a cop whose has a writer shadowing her. With many secrets in every episode.

I find it an amazing story that has love intertwined in it. I love the mix of comedy and romance great theory and it has a brain. It's clever writing and wonderful people playing amazing parts. I think it's amazing that they found two people (Nathan and stana) who have amazing chemistry.

The fact is if they show you all the sex and kissing that you want you will only want more. Soon if not now you will want a full episode of just that. I don't want that. I love the show the way it is. It's the best show and the best dance I have seen since the x files. Except I think these characters actually love each other more.

So just be happy with this amazing show that Andrew created. If you think you can write something better than go write it and let's see what you have to offer. I will enjoy every Monday I get from this show.

I'm a castle and caskett shipper for life.

      Caskett forever!!!!!

  5. I enjoy the Caskett momonts as much as the next shipper. The whole season has been about their relationship. I love it and its fun to watch. I also love seeing the other characters get the spotlight. We saw Ryan get his moment last season in Kick the Ballistics. He was amazing and its one of my all-time favorite shows. Last night was Javi`s turn we got to see his apt,we seen him play badass and kick tail.I thought Jon did a great job and I personally loved the episode. I can't wait to find out more about Ryan.

  6. I do feel sorry for those who ONLY watch for the romance. You're going to be disappointed for the rest of the series because one can't write the entire show around Caskett making googly eyes at each other and always touching each other. Romance should NOT be expected every episode throughout an episode because this isn't a soap opera or even Gilmore Girls or The Golden Girls for that matter. There's a crime each week to solve and the Caskett moments will not overshadow the entire premise of the show.

I see them solving cases together as their passion and the way they just ARE with each other shows how much they care. The physicality will be spread out throughout the remainder of the season and they are not new to each other. It's not like they JUST met. They've been emotionally intimate for years and we DID see them nit being able to keep their hands off each other in After The Storm and Murder He Wrote and the references of shaking hands a LOT in Secrets and comments about handcuffs at her place in Probable Cause and Castle pressuring her to wear her Nebula 9 costume and how he couldn't even wait for the elevator doors to close and other moments that show they're physically attracted to each other. To expect to see this all the time is just not going to happen.

I rather love how connected they are yet still have a ways to go and still finding their way. Both are scared of losing the other and don't have that security yet in knowing just how invested the other is in this relationship, but it's a work in progress.

If they gave us too much physicality it would get old fast because shippers need to realize we're a small portion of the 10+ million viewers that.tune in. Some don't even watch for the relationship or want to see Castle and Beckett in a romance. My coworker watches because she loves all the characters and told me before Always that she hoped they didn't make them a couple because she believes the shows get stale when leads are put together and recently shared with me how she's glad the relationship hasn't changed the format too much.

So for all of those who want more, more, more.... get used to waiting out all the 90210 and Saved By The Bell lovey dovey moments. These are not teenagers who have to jump each other and kiss all the time to have chemistry. Nathan and Stana have it in spades. Their interrogation scenes with suspects and how they build theory and work together excites me just as much as the kissing and bedroom scenes. I love the intimate scenes we've gotten and the way both are working through the conflict and insecurities to make it work.

I am glad Marlowe's being stingy because it keeps me anticipating what's to come.

For anyone who doesn't feel the.love and connection, perhaps stop wanting to see what you want to see happen and instead focus on what is happening. Castle and Beckett are sti themselves and learning how to keep the mistakes and baggage from their pasts from tearing them apart.

I am enjoying the ride so far and the journey from episode 1 to now has been amazing to see unfold. I totally get why they are behaving as they are. What we're seeing them try to work out was inevitable to me because I always felt Beckett was a bit desperate when she went to Castle in the rain and broke her wall down to let him in as to not lose him, but still has rubble to clear away and Castle is trying not to be pushed away again or make mistakes. Their relationship has NEVER been easy, but whatever it is that keeps them coming back in spite of the troubles is definitely worth fighting for and through their issues. Love them!

    1. Anon 10:06 I couldn't agree with you more. You put in words everything I think I feel about the show. In so glad that there are others that think the way I do. I only found out about this show the summer before the fourth season and it was just a clip on YouTube and I was immediately hooked. The chemistry between the two leads is so amazing. I just love it. I didn't know who stana katic even was before this show and she inspired me to go after everything I want. And Nathan fillion is just so talented. Anyway sorry for straying off the subject. My point is I was hooked to this show from the moment I saw that tiny clip.

I will admit I love their romance together. I really like that they show Beckett's insecurities and vulnerabilities. I also love that they show that she has pretty much been "in love" with castle since the moment she saw him. They show her as human. Because I feel insecurities myself.

I like how all the story lines make sence and Andrew always goes back to his previous writing and keeps this love story fresh and knows what he is writing. It's very smart writing.

I look forward to this show every week. My friends make fun of me but I don't care. This is my all time favorite show. I look forward to knowing what's happening and I can't wait to see what is about to unfold.

Until then I will watch reruns.

      Caskett forever and ever!!!!!

    3. I'm fairly certain that thoughtful, reasonable people like you all make up the majority of the fandom. They just don't always make up the majority of the comments. On that note, thanks for taking the time to put things so well.

    4. 10:41, I would love to know what clip you saw on You Tube that got you hooked...I love hearing How I Got Hooked on Castle stories! Mine was the promo for Countdown that I caught while flipping through channels...it showed a quick clip of the freezer scene with Beckett whispering "Castle". Now, I had never seen the show, but I knew enough that the lady cop was always mad at the writer guy and any promo for it she was usually yelling "Castle!" or snapping "Castle!" but I had never heard her say it so softly as she did in that promo...it intrigued me to the point that I had to tune in the following week to see what kind of situation would bring her to say his name like that and Bam said the lady I was hooked!!! Took some time to catch up with the characters and storyline, but now there is no looking back!!

    5. Anon 8:46, I wrote the 10:41 comment. Umm it's actually a silly clip that caught my attention that I saw on YouTube but it was from the first season and the clip was from the poker game that they all played with Montgomery and javi and Ryan and it was when the boys were saying they wanted the detective to make the writer take off his pants. To beat him at poker. I can't remember magics exact line but it was that scene that got me hooked and I have loved it ever since. And I also loved the way stana katic in that scene said "bro". It is dorky for me to like it. Just because of that scene but there it is.

      Anyway enjoy castle, I am.

      Caskett forever!!!!

  7. I like this 'how do you get hooked on castle' theme question...........i'll talk about that one later, but, just want to say, i hear ya - but, as a fellow caskett shipper said to me.......we can watch other crime procedurals if that's all we want to see, but, we watch Castle b/c of the love story.......that is the underlining connection here and what keeps me. Now, my husband just likes the lighthearted comedic banters, he doesn't even like crime dramas, so he came for that adn stayed for teh clever and funny writing.......I was always into the romance.......so you are right that it is appealing to diff. people for diff. reasons and I appreciate you saying to step back and jsut enjoy it, but, i still would like them to continue the castle theme in every ep.........

  8. HEY Marlowe is playing us again. he has kept the romance down so get everybody worked up over it, seems to be working. Why would he do this I think because valintines day is coming. He will then give the romantic fans something to crow about.

    2. I don't trust anything anymore. They hyped up Cmas ep and though it was a sweet 2 min. in the end and I replayed that scene over and over and even liked the interaction with him and Alexis and Martha at the table, I still dont' trust it won't be more than a minute on V-day.........but, hey, I'll take it. I am just not going to hold my breath that it'll be Caskett mania.......I have a feeling the most we will ever get of the whole season will be from Murder He Wrote...........

  9. Dont get me wrong i love caskett but i love how everyone wants caskett together everyone wants them to kiss so they do yet people still find stuff to moan about its a procedural show yes caskett are the main part but all the others cast have to have main parts in the show as well if ur watching it for all the romance then ur watching the wrong show as its a crime show.

Everyone moans and moans then an episode gives u wat u were moaning about then u find something else about the episode to moan about

  10. I agree it is good they show they can compartmentalize the relationship for work. I agree I want to see a bit more romance. I love the other characters as well. I do wish for a bit of a bone in each episode. Hill Street Blues used to end lots of episodes with Furillo/Davenport moments. Pillow talk, sometimes action, sometimes just at dinner. It worked. I would love Castle to something like that at start or finish of more episodes...not all but some. I will continue to watch. I do trust Marlowe...to a point....I know each season evolves as it goes so sometimes he doesn't deliver exactly what he said but he has a reason. Just my opinion.
