TV Guide: Beckett Isn't Castle's First Muse

When Jennifer Beals comes to Castle as part of February sweeps two-parter, she will be more than just one of Rick Castle's old flames.

When Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett (Stana Katic) discover a murder victim who was apparently murdered by a rogue CIA agent, they quickly find themselves in the middle of a much larger investigation, led by Beals' Sophia Conrad.

"She is a CIA agent and, as we know, in Richard Castle's first series of books, a female CIA agent figured prominently," creator and executive producer Andrew W. Marlowe tells TVGuide.com. "So, of course, it would lead us to ask: Is Beckett Castle's first muse?"

Naturally, Beckett learning that she isn't Castle's first will leave Beckett with lots of questions about the will-they-won't-they couple's future. "Beckett has to wrestle with where she thought she stood in Castle's life and where she might really stand in Castle's life," Marlowe says. "I think it's natural in a situation like that to feel threatened to some extent, and to measure yourself up."

What [Sophia] meant to Castle at the time ... and whether or not it makes Beckett feel any less important in Castle's life, are all things we're dealing with," he continues. "Those are questions that Beckett is trying to have answered without exposing her feelings too much."

  2. I'm really hoping for Beckett's secret to be revealed this episode. Otherwise there's no point, to bringing a third party. Haven't we had enough of those with Gina and Serena Kaye? Of course, it's different this time, because sophia was Castle's muse, but still, it's jealousy. I hope it pushes Beckett to reveal that she remembers everything.

    5. Running home to Mommy and watching movies with my daughter sounds like a pretty good life to me :) Just sayin.'

Also, no relationship outside of work? I'm not seeing that at all. Castle and Beckett regularly spend time together after work. And lately, it's been Beckett instigating the little impromptu get-togethers, which sounds like progress to me.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just countering your opinion with mine. It what makes these discussions interesting.

    6. I totally agree

  5. I'm also hoping/predicting that this will be the episode in which Beckett's secret is revealed. Could the fact that she feels threatened by Sophia's presence motivate her to come clean with Castle? I mean, Beckett IS human, after all. She may try to take the safe road all the time and not give into her emotions but, in the end, she's just a woman in love. I'm not saying she would throw Castle's "I love you" in his face as a way to gain the upper hand over Sophia (who she sees as a threat)...not intentionally, anyway...but could she reveal that she heard him say he loves her out of sheer panic and fear that she's going to lose him?

I mean, since Beckett heard Castle say he loves her she has probably had a growing sense of security in terms of where she figures into his life. I want to see Beckett secure and fully aware that Castle loves her and wants to be with her. However, that sense of security, in all relationships, can lead people to take it for granted that they are now and will always be IT for their significant other. Maybe it's good for Beckett to kind of get a kick in the pants and lead her to think about how she's been going about things with Castle.

I NEVER want to see Beckett hurt but I do think she needs to reflect on how she has been proceeding and how she wants to proceed with Castle. Does she want to keep denying what she knows about his feelings and how she feels about him? Is that really getting her anywhere? She's definitely been a bit more open when it comes to flirting with him ever since she decided to let Dr. Burke help her let go of her mom's murder...I mean, it was pretty huge that she suggested they act as each other's plus one to Ryan's wedding...and she DID suggest they try the handcuffs thing in the future (sans tiger), which was also pretty saucy of her. So, yeah, those little things have been great to see. Still, is it enough? Is it time for her to be more vocal and direct with Castle regarding her feelings? Does she need to give Castle something more to go on then some suggestive remarks now and then?

I am in no way saying that the whole fate of the relationship is on Beckett's shoulders. It's definitely got to be a team effort to get things going with these two. But, like, AWM said, this situation will give each of them cause to reflect on how they're handling things and their hopes/fears for the future of their relationship.

I would love to see Beckett try to beat around the bush the whole episode in an effort to get answers to her questions about Sophia without exposing her own feelings. Castle will, of course, question why she cares so much. Beckett will do her best to play it off like it's just curiosity and nothing more...she doesn't care...why would she care, anyway? By the end of Pandora, I'd love to see her just lose it and let it out that it bugs her that he had another muse, another HER before they met. It makes her think that maybe he'll move onto yet another muse once he's all done with her. Castle will listen to her outburst and then say something to her like, "Sophia may have inspired a character in a book but she's not my muse. She's not you. Nobody is. There's no moving on from you for me." That's when I'd really love to have her tell him the truth and admit she heard him...and, of course, that's when the episode will end, leaving us to sweat it out until "Linchpin."

    1. Part 2...

I have high hopes for this two-parter. We've had a great season so far. There's been a lot of subtext and subtle moments that have led to slow but steady progress for Beckett and Castle. Now, though, I think it's time for the implicit to become more explicit. I think there needs to be some honest conversation between Beckett and Castle to get things out in the open. From what AWM has said in recent interviews, I do think Beckett's secret is about to come out...and I think that reveal will set off a series of events that will change everything for Beckett and Castle.

    2. I just hope this time it all works as a trigger for Beckett to take one more step, say something to Castle, let him know she cares, etc. but not like last time with just a fit of jealousy. Something different. You're right, she's been progressing and it's only logical to have her keep going ahead, not backwards.

Beckett may be so doubtful about where she stands that she may force the issue or let something slip while trying to find out that normally she wouldn't have.

      Thank you Elena :)

    6. Aw, thanks, guys! I'm so so so excited for what's to come in the next few episodes. Everything I say is pure speculation but I trust whatever happens is part of AWM's master plan. He has yet to let me down. I don't think he's about to start now. :)

  6. Oh my.. No I did not just almost cry reading this... This could be good or bad. Im guessing it will be a bit of both. I hate to think that Beckett would second guess what Castles feels about her and that she would just be another notch...yeah that really worries me. However this will allow Kate to think about her own feelings as well as jealousy. I really really hope she lets it slip to Castle that this is bothering her that her secret would be amazing to come out now but even if it dosent i hope Castle realizes some of how she feels and tries to talk about it some. Im equal parts nervous and excited for this episode.

    1. Oh, I know. It makes ME sad to hear that Castle had a muse before Beckett, I can't imagine how it will affect her. I imagine she'll feel a little hurt and betrayed, and then conflicted about whether Castle really does love her, and she'll wonder if he says that to all his muses.

Personally, I'm hoping that Castle's past with Sophia wasn't anything sexual. (wishful thinking, I know!) But the writers have thrown this at us before, with Kyra, Meredith, Gina, and possibly some others that I can't think of right now. So, maybe AWM will have a fresh storyline for us, with Sophia playing some other role in his past aside from lover.

    2. Am I the only one who thinks it would be awesome if Sophia was more interested in Beckett than Castle, and Kate was just clueless?

This would amuse me. Beckett all jealous and even confessing over nothing.

  7. ok someone posted on here in another discussion about this 2 parter that AM said in an interview that the episode about Castle dad would bring up issues with Becketts secret....i was hoping/predicting too that Becketts secret would come out in one of these eps but this just confused me. i don't really remember AM saying that tho...???

If this is true, it would kinda be cute if Castle goes over to Becketts apartment because he finds out that Martha knew all along who his father was and she tells him then that she loves him...but idk coz that wouldn't make him feel better it would probably make him feel worse...

On a different note, in this episode possibly leading up to when her secret may/may not be revealed im hoping that Beckett maybe asks Castle sometime, 'Did you love her?' or 'Where you together?' or 'Was it like this?' (meaning what they have) and then he says something like what Elena "Sophia may have inspired a character in a book but she's not my muse. She's not you. Nobody is. There's no moving on from you for me" :)

  9. Haha cool my theory is came true. When I first heard the CIA agent would be his old muse I'm like Beckett is going to be insecure about it. Anyway this should be interesting to see how she deals with this. Especially if the secret comes out in it. I hope elena's theory comes true. And just thought about it now but Kyra was castles muse and he loved her. Anyway I think it makes sense she is insecure, just hear me out. Of course she knows castle loves her, but at the same time it's like well this is our last book together and they lost touch after derreck storm so what am I? But he loved kyra and she was his muse but he moved on, well she did get married but still. It's like she is naturally questioning if she's important enough to be his muse no matter how he feels because she's insecure. I mean her dad drank after her mom died and didn't really help her grieve, will left her to go to his job, Josh well he kept leaving and he didn't even go to montgomery's volume which speaks volumes I think. So I think when it comes to any man in her life she's insecure. Anyway srry for ranting. I hope you understand what I'm saying. Anyway Elena love ur theory and everybody's posts.

    1. Actually, it was never mentioned that Kyra was his muse. He just dedicated the book to her.

  10. Yeah, I think this whole 'muse' thing is going to be a huge deal for Beckett. She might start feeling like 'muse' is just another way to say 'use.'

Yay for emotional growth and all that jazz; anything that's worth saying about it has already been said by those more articulate, so on that note, I hope there's some really intense action in these episodes. I always enjoy the really tense, fast-moving, nail-biting ones.

Honestly, though, I'm not sure if I want this to be the episode when Kate admits her secret. I'm probably in the minority here, but I really do appreciate the slow pace they've taken so far, and I wouldn't mind waiting a few more episodes for the secret to come out. Sometime nearer the end of the season.

Because guys. Even if they aren't 'together' they're already like best friends, and I think it's the cutest thing.

I have to wake up in just four more hours, so I'm going to cut this potentially epic rant short right here and wish you all a hapy upcoming Castle Monday.

    2. Yeah, I kind of want it to happen that way. However, I don't see how she can reveal her secret without also saying that she cares about him too. At that point, they'll have to have an open conversation about the status of their relationship. I'm not really sure how they are going to handle her secret coming out first without forcing the relationship to move at a much faster pace.

      Delete
    3. An open conversation wouldn’t have enough drama. My best guess is, if she does spill it out in a jealous rant (which would be an awesome moment!!) the case will get in the way and they will never have the chance to sit down and talk about it.

I mean, big bads are still out there for her, Castle could simply think “well if she remembered all along and didn’t tell me maybe she have her reasons” and even hurt he would stay with her because that’s just what he does and the issue would once again be in standby.

I don’t belive in the Moonlight curse and all but I’m really enjoying this dance they’re doing so, works for me. I don’t see them togheter just yet (i want them to struggle, you know? I know this may ban me for this community lol but I really enjoy the show, sorry!)

Sorry for my English, kisses from Lisbon!

    4. Ooooooooh! I really like that scenario! I so want to see Beckett just lose control of herself when it comes to her feelings for Castle. What a great way for her to let it slip that she heard Castle say he loves her!

      Delete
    5. Right? That's what I was thinking at least. It seems like something jealous Beckett would do. And hasn't AM said that Beckett's secret would be out soon and or first? And she has been really controlled with her emotions towards Castle lately, just smiling at him when he's not looking, I want to see her lose that control even if it's just for a second. I'm sure AM could find a way to quickly progress the plot in a way that disables them from getting to talk about it immediately after. If it is anything like the other two part episodes, it will be a huge caskett episode and super emotionally charged.

      Delete
    6. I like this scenario. I don't see Beckett just coming out and telling Castle her secret. I see it being forced out of her in such a way that she slips up and remembers more than she should while in his presence.

I also see him being majorly pissed when he finds out that she's known how he feels about her for months without saying anything, so we'll have that roadblock once her secret does come out. And then of course, when she learns his secret, another HUGE roadblock. I'm not complaining though! I trust Andrew Marlowe and his team of excellent writers. I want Caskett together more than anything, but they should take as long as they need to make sure that the Caskett relationship happens naturally and realistically.

  12. This seems like it could be an important episode in terms of secrets...don't know. However I was actually hoping that Sophia would just be a muse or good friend and not another old flame. But the article confirm that she is. I would have liked it more if he hadn't slept with her, I mean I would like to castle have interactions with women and not sleep with them. I wish they portrayed him a bit better than just someone who sleeps with every woman form his past.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the action I hope this episode will have. As for Beckett being jealous, we've seen that, quite a few times, so I would like to move past that storyline. The more these old flames Rae brought in, the more harder it's going to be for castle to prove to Beckett she is in fact important to him. I really hope this isn't with the old flames and making beckett jealous for the season. I would like her to go to him on something mre substantial than just blurting out her feelings out of jealousy.

A lot of fans think her secret will somehow surface this two parter. I would love that but I really don't know.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think the proof that Castle gives Beckett that he loves her is that he hasn't slept with her when he has slept with basically every other woman from his past. He actually cares about her, it's a mature thing, so I understand the writers implementing that aspect of his past. I don't mind her spilling her secret in a jealous manner as long as later she has the mature and real conversation with Castle instead of sweeping it under the rug like they so often do.

For those of you not familiar with the US system, this is the time of the year when the number of viewer ratings determine a show's rankings/ renewal status. 2. @anon 6am go to www.richardcastle.net and look at books. There is a list of all the books Castle had meant to of published. All the Derick Storm novels are there as is a description of the book. That is how fans are piecing together this CIA agents potential past with Castle. In the books she was Derick Stoem's handler. Did castle base storm on himself like he has Jameaon Rook in the Nikki hear books? Who knows. However from the book descriptions storm and the CIA agents relationship is not purely professional.

    3. That line says "So far it's all flash." It comes after Castle refers to something as "impressive." I think they are just discussing something that Castle feels is cool and Beckett thinks is just smoke and mirrors, nothing special. I'm thinking Castle is wowed by something having to do with Sophia Conrad and her CIA stuff and Beckett, partly out of jealousy, makes it clear she does not share his opinion. She had the same attitude in Tick, Tick, Tick and Boom when Jordan Shaw and the FBI took over the 12th with all their fancy equipment.

  20. Castle's muses and old flames: Kyra Blaine (KB), Kate Beckett (KB), Sophia Conrad (SC)... sorry this one doesn't compute, wrong initials. ha ha ha.

    ReplyDelete
  21. You know, the interesting thing that I find about Sophia Conrad is her name. These 2 names were featured prominently in 2 other episodes, "A Rose for Everafter," back in season 2, and "The Dead Pool" in season 3.

In "A Rose for Everafter," the bridesmaid who was murdered was named Sophie. She was supposed to be in Kyra BLaine's wedding party, and Kyra happened to be an old flame of Castle's. This is the episode where Beckett started to realize that her feelings for Castle were more than just friendship, and we got our first glimpse of jealous Beckett. She even realized that she just might be Castle's type, because Kyra is "real" unlike his ex- wives. And Kyra told Beckett at the end of the episode that "He's all yours," signaling the beginning of the Caskett ship.

In "The Dead Pool," Castle mentors a young writer named Alex Conrad. Conrad takes to Beckett, and begins meeting up with her sans Castle to question her about murdery stuff, and Castle becomes very jealous of Conrad's bond with Beckett. At this point, Castle and Beckett have known each other much longer, and they've even kissed, so Castle's jealousy is much more evident that Beckett's was in season 2. At the end of the episode, he actually has an open conversation with her about it (go watch the clip, it's swoon- worthy!) Castle actually confesses that her spending time with another writer makes him jealous, to which she replies that she is a "one- writer girl," and then Beckett proceeds to use "always," for the first time.

My point is that these two episodes both featured character development, particularly with Beckett. We see her first realization of her feelings, and a hint of jealousy. As for Castle, we had seen him jealous before over Demming and Josh, but this is the first time that Beckett really sees it, and then calls him out on it, leading to an honest, open discussion of their feelings (okay, not all of their feelings, but you get it!)

I think that the themes of these two episodes will be prominently featured in the two- parter, what with Beckett having to deal with an old muse (and possibly old flame) and the insecurities and jealousy that are bound to come with it. She is going to struggle with the fact that she may be a "one writer girl," but that does to necessarily make Castle a "one muse guy." I think, given the development of Beckett's character in the there two episodes, that it is likely her secret will come out here.

I hope my rambling makes sense to all of you. I hope it's not just me who likes to analyze things like this! I just don't think that Sophia Conrad's name is an accident. AWM and Co. are far too smart for that.

I'm off to view more spoilers! Chiao!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Wow! I never even pieced together the meaning behind Sophia Conrad's name. You're definitely onto something here. Very nice!

I also feel like AWM and Co are very smart/sneaky and love leaving little Easter eggs for us in various episodes. When we take all those Easter eggs and examine them, they will give us clues to what's to come for Beckett and Castle.

For example, back in "Kill Shot" Esposito references a box in which Beckett has locked away all her feelings and memories about her shooting. He continues with a comment about how some things are best kept locked away bc of the effects they can have on someone. Was it an accident that such a box was mentioned in that way only to have an entire episode called "Pandora" 6 episodes or so down the line? I think not.

There's been tons of speculation over whether or not this is the episode(s) in which Beckett's secret comes out. I think, considering the very title and its reference to Pandora's Box as well as Esposito's seemingly throw-away comment from "Kill Shot," it's unthinkable to say this is NOT when the secret comes out.

I agree 100% that we are going to see some major plot development here between Beckett and Castle. Sophia Conrad's presence is going to shake things up for both of them, especially Beckett. Like AWM said, it's going to give her cause to evaluate where she stands in Castle's life and reflect on how she has been handling their relationship thus far.

I'm so curious to see HOW the secret comes out. Does she blurt it out in a fit of jealousy or panic? I suspect she will DECIDE on her own to tell him and not just have it come tumbling out suddenly. The reason I think so goes back to the myth of Pandora's Box, which I actually just read to my 5th graders today! Pandora had this box but was told by Zeus never to open it. She can't resist, though, and decides to open it and let out whatever is inside. She made a conscious decision to open the box, consequences be damned. So, that's why I'm thinking Beckett takes the same approach.

Anyway, love your thinking! Great post.

  23. I don't like this. :( I don't like that we're (and Beckett too) suddenly finding out Castle's had other muses. Just reading what Stana says - makes me sad. Disappointed. I'm tired of her pushing him away. I like this slow progress thing we've got going on right now, even if I'm looking forward to them figuring it out ever so much. I don't want to backtrack - don't like the idea of Beckett questioning if this is just "Castle's thing" - having muses and falling for them or what not. I don't think it is then so much a jealousy thing as it is something that... cheapens what they have together. :( And cheapening that, that's what really bothers me. I guess its a minor... "plus" that the other woman figured "prominently" in books but wasn't the main character and yet Beckett IS that main character and everything revolves around her, but... still. I guess, if we're going this route though what I hope to see is maybe Sophia being the slightly insecure one - the one trying to figure out what Beckett has that she doesn't that keeps Rick around. I'd like Beckett to overhear her ask Castle that and have him answer in a soft, ridiculously smitten & sweet way that has Beckett biting back a smile and walking away before she can be caught eavesdropping, her doubts at rest. :) I just... don't want backtracking. I didn't like the Mayor ep. I didn't like feeling like it was a return to cracks in their relationship and insecurities and doubts that we're not taken care of but just left behind when the case got closed. I don't know.
